History of Kuchchaveli Divisional Secretariat
Kuchchaveli Divisional Secretary Division is the longest DS Division in Trincomalee District. It is situated in the Eastern costal area and bounded by Mullaitivu district in North and Bay of Bengal in the East and Trincomalee Town & Gravets DS Division in the South and Morawewa &Gomarankadawala DS divisions in the West. Population of the area is 42,577 and the total area is 504.23 Sq. Km.
There are Muslim, Tamil, and Sinhalese are living together in the Division and they follow Islamic, Hinduism, Christianity and Buddhism. The people in the area mostly do paddy cultivation, onion cultivation, vegetable cultivation, fishing, cattle farming and some are government employees. This area was famous for tourism and salt production in the past and these were abandoned due to the disturbances prevailed. Trincomalee campus of the Eastern University and the Lanka Mineral Sand Corporation are the valuable Government Institution in this Division.
Length of this division about 77km and it compraises 24 Grama Niladhari divisions and 78 villages from Periyakulam to Thennamaravaady.
The Mineral Sand Corporation at Pulmoodai, Coir industry at Irakakandy and Saltern at Nilaveli, further protected area called Pigeon Island at Nilaveli are situated in Kuchchaveli division. Now a days it is becoming very famous for tourism also.
